Cognisco Appraisal System adopted within risk based appraisal and training programme at major risk services company
Major incidents rarely occur at customer sites but when they do it can be catastrophic for all concerned. Lives can be lost, reputation damaged and the case for liability can drag through the courts for years. Being able to prove the competence of employees and establishing individual training requirements to maintain this, will help to protect the company and individual employees should something go wrong.
Health and Safety pilot
The client is major risk services supplier and wished to measure whether their engineer surveyors understood company specific health and safety requirements as well as generic health and safety issues regarding their everyday work. The client’s business involves the supply of risk services within the industrial sector, which means that their engineer surveyors are both exposed to potentially harmful situations and have to appraise the potential for future risks within the environments to which they are sent.
Accurate appraisal of Health and Safety issues would allow the client to identify knowledge and understanding gaps and implement training where necessary. The client saw the production and implementation of the Appraisal as a way of piloting the Cognisco approach with regard to further appraisal of their engineer surveyors in the future.
Why Cognisco?
The factors that initially attracted the client to Cognisco are:
Independence:
“The fact that you author the questions/responses and facilitate the process so that we focus on what is actually important rather on what we think is important”
Academic rigour:
“The fact that you have expertise to bring to bear which we do not have in-house which makes the appraisal more credible and ensures that we are focusing on the appraisal of Engineer Surveyors' understanding rather than memory”
Systems:
“We are unable to develop our own IT systems as quickly as we would prefer and manually marking 500+ appraisals was never a realistic option. Cognisco's system enables the marking to be done automatically and makes the generation of management information (e.g. training needs analyses) a relatively simple process”
The Health and Safety pilot Appraisal was successfully delivered to over 500 engineer surveyors. The clear, concise data which it fed back to the company in terms of engineers’ knowledge gaps meant that Cognisco Appraisals have now become a major part of the client’s in-house Risk Based Appraisal and Training programme.
